A Ph.D. student in the Department of Economics recently won the 2015 Barry M. Moriarty Graduate Paper Competition sponsored by the Southern Regional Science Association.
George Akpandjar won the $1,000 prize in the national competition. Previous winners were from Duke, University of Texas at Austin, University of North Carolina at Chappell Hill, Texas A&M, Ohio State and University of Southern California.
George presented a paper entitled, “The Effect of Homeownership on Unemployment: Outcomes and Implications” based on his dissertation investigating the relationship between homeownership and unemployment using a job search framework.
The members of his dissertation committee are professors Walt Mayer, Bill Chappell, Natalia Kolesnikova, and Xin Dang.
George’s work was supported in part by a 2014 Fall Fellowship awarded by the Graduate School. George will graduate in May and start a new position at Bank of America.
